Viy is a mythological character from Ukrainian folklore, known as a powerful spirit of the underworld. His image became widely known thanks to Nikolai Gogol′s story “Viy”.
Viy is portrayed as a creature of horrifying appearance, personifying the forces of darkness. The main feature of Viy is his huge, heavy eyelids, which he himself cannot lift - it must be done by servants. It is believed that if Viy looks at someone with his deadly gaze, this creature is doomed to perish. In folklore, Viy is often associated with the world of the dead, darkness and magic.
